When I ran a wire direct from the sending unit to the gauge, it went off of the perpetual "past full", to 3/4 which should be an accurate reading. Problem should be in the wire between sender/gauge or connection issues...right? Somewhere in the testing procedure, I had decided to disconnect sender wire, and while unscrewing, I failed to notice that the bottom nut, along with electrical post was spinning at the same time. I think I have managed to screw up my sending unit, because I can not replicate the above test. Lacking X-ray vision, and never had a sending unit apart, would this be something I could repair, or do I need a new sender?

The post just goes through the plate to a metal strap, as long as the two are connected it will work, however if you grounded your (that post/strap) + side, you could have blown the gauge.
Gauge Test w/o sender, actually when you ground the gauge + side, it should read full, the only way to know if the sender is working is to either put gas in the tank, or pull the sender, reconnect + & ground, and lift the float as if you were filling the tank, then you will know if the sender is working, as long as you know the gauge is good.
