I took off out of state to college in the 56 in 1978 and it made it fine through 2 OK winters, it was one of the most trouble-free trucks I've ever owned. I now have a 57 3100 that belonged originally to my grandmothers neighbor. I've known the truck all my life. It is in such nice shape you wouldn't believe it unless you saw it. Original everything (except trans). The truck is from the Texas Panhandle and is rust free and in superb condition. After the old guy passed his grandson got it, thankfully not for long and put in a Muncie 4 speed, and then rebuilt the 265 but somewhere along the way forgot to put a ring in the top groove of one of the pistons when he "rebuilt" it. It has a big gouge in #2 cyl but I think it can be salvaged. My uncle bought it from the grandidiot and used it while mowing lawns for a while and my brother bought it from him in 1995. My little brother and my dad started restoring it and finished blasting the frame and painting it. My brother passed away in 1997 and my dad lost interest in it so he gave it to me. I've collected a few parts including an NOS tailgate and some other stuff. Been trying to finish a Corvette resto and as soon as it is done I'll finish the truck up. Toyed with the idea of making a street rod but I really like original trucks. I met into a guy a couple of weeks ago with a 57 Cameo who has an extra, albeit rusty, big window cab. I'm now intrigued with putting a big back window in. I recently found a website where a guy in the Austin area did just that, pretty interesting. I'm not really a sheet metal guy and probably wouldn't attempt that but wouldn't mind hauling it up there for him to do. I also heard that a panel is made for doing the same thing.
