| | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 126 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 126 | i did a search and couldnt find anything on this. i have a 66 C-30, and this is the first pre-73 truck i have owned. i keep hearing a whirring sound when im going in reverse when i let off the clutch. just wondering if this is normal or a sign of things to come. also i cant figure out how to check/fill the tranny fluid. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks guys.

You should be hearing it to some degree in all gears. It is likely worn out. You should probably replace the clutch also since you have to remove the transmission to get to it. All 3 speed and 4 speed transmissions have a fill plug on the right side of the trans case.

It will have some whine in all the gears except high but if its too much it could have a brg. in the trans that is scored. There is a pipe plug on the side of the trans. You fill it to the lvel of the plug. There is a plug on the bottom to drain it which is a good idea. Sometimes the old grease has been in there for many years.

If the noise happens just as you're letting the pedal out to engage the clutch, the throwout bearing is at least part of the problem.
