I have a 58 chevy apache (1/2 ton) with the 4 speed manual. I recently connected the 4 speed to a chevy 350. In order to do so, I had to pull the top of the tranny off (gear shifter and top plate). When I put everything back together I lost first and second gear. The clutch IS engaging.
After losing first and second gears, I pulled the top off of the tranny again. Now I have 1st and 2nd, but no reverse! Does anyone know a remedy for this problem?

Sounds like your not getting the shift rails in where they should be. I know, easy said hard to do, but I ain't got any secret for being able to do it, maybe someone else knows a trick.

Then there is no guessing to which gear it was in. You should be able to pull the shifter and move the forks till it is in neutral. Then re-install with the shifter pretty much vertical. Hope that helps.

With a big screw driver line up all the slots in the shift rails. Put the lever back in with it going into the opening in the slots. If that doesn't do it you have missed the syncro. sleevs with the forks & you will have pull the cover.

(that was long). I think the problem with reverse is the position of the of the "reverse shifter lever". It needs to positioned in the "reverse shifter head".
Laymens terms, The vertical flat rod on the passenger side of transmission that moves the reverse gear has to be positioned on the reverse shifter shaft mechanism.
Just move the vertical flat rod so it aligns with the reverse shifter shaft mechanism.

I tried messing with the lever in the tranny, moving rings back and forth, Sometimes I can get 3rd and 4th gear, but nothing else. Sometimes I have reverse. Anyone else have any ideas? I'll be messing with it all day tomorrow. Clutch is engaging perfectly. Just syncros messed up.... | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | You need to get everything in neutral so you know where it is. You may need to remove the driveshaft so you can tell when it's in neutral. You will be able to spin the output shaft when all is right. Ferndale recently had a very similar problem. maybe give that thread a read. https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=624914&page=5 | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 149 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 149 | That thread was very helpful, thank you. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 149 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 149 | Problem solved! Thank you everyone for your help. I placed the shifter in nuetral, and made sure the gears were all in neutral(so the outshaft spinned freely). Once that was done, I ever so carefully placed the shifter forks into position and works great! | | |
