the sm465 transmission in my truck is having troubles. the shifter has tore up. i was wondering if anybody has experienced this type of problems and if so what did they do. i wasnt driving when it broke so i dont know exaclty what happened, i took it mud bogging then i let somebody borrow it and it broke then. the shifter just moves around freely, i can get it in to 1,2,and 3 but not low or reverse. it seems like there is some sort of linkage or somethin broke. i have had the entire body off the truck and was unable to get the shifter out, tried to push it down and twist but it didnt work. is there a way to get into the transmission other then tearing the entire cover off. thanks for any ideas, by the way its out of an 84, i dont have a pre 73 but i sure would like to have a 67 or so.

You have to have the trans halfway in reverse for the cover to lift out. It does present a problem being you can,t shift to reverse. Have you taken the lever out of the cover yet. You press down on the collar with pliers 7 turn it counter-clocwise about 30 degrees. You might find the problem there or be able to shift partway into reverse with a big screwdriver. Those are tough tranny,s. They are hard to work on but I think you will know a lot about it before long.

thanks ill try it, the truck was stole and burnt a year and a half ago, then we spent about 10 months fixing it. we have put a new rearend in it, clutch, lots of wiring and many other parts. i thought the transmission would be the last thing i would break. i just bought a sand rail that needs a lot of work so im kinda pressed for money hopefully it want cost too much.

It's really not that bad to take the top cover off one of these transmissions. You just have to make sure the shift forks align when you put it back on.
