'62 C10, 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree

I noticed today when I went to run some errands that when I come to a complete stop and went to put it into first it was grinding? I have heard the throwout bearing making noice for some time but haven't paid it any mind.

You can feel the gear still spinning if you put a litle pressure on the shifter with your finger. With the clutch pushed all the way in it will not let me back in to first gear.

Any suggestions? Is there a clutch adjustment? Maybe the clutch is not seperating enough due to the clutch cable needing to be adjusted? If so, where is the adjustment made???

Kinda at a stand still here and can't doing any tooling around until I get this hammered out.

Do you have a hydraulic clutch? If so, its probably out of juice.

After looking under the hood this morning it would look as if I have a hydraulic clutch. There is a rusty looking box mounted on the firewall next to the washer fluid box. At the bottom there are two circles coming out of the box that look like they are making room for two pistons. One line coming out of the bottom leads to the brakes, and one leads somewhere around where the tranny meets the engine. I'm going to pull the cap tonight and see what the fluis level looks like. Any idea what kind of fluid this takes? I might look into replacing the whole unit seeing how there is a leak somewhere. If my local auto parts store can't get one do you have any suggestions on where on can be found?

regular brake fluid. That is also your brake reservoir, how are they holding up?

The brakes seem to be doing fine. After scratching my head last night I did realize that I have been having to step on them harder the past few days. Nothing too bad but I did notice a slight difference. Hmmmmmmm Good info guys, I appreciate it!! I'll stop off and get some fluid on the way home.

There has been some oily looking junk all around the fluid housing since a bought it a few weeks back. Steamed the whole engine and a few days later noticed the oily junk back on the firewall around the fuild reservoir. I wonder if it is leaking from the lid gasket? I noticed the filler cap looks like galvanized metal with a slight raised area in the middle with a little nut. I'm sure there has to be some old gasket under it.

Looks like some wrencing fun tonight when I get home.

Hope you got to it before the clutch is totally dry. Once its totally dry, you have to bleed it like brakes. And they didn't put the slave cylinder in the most convenient place.

Me too, but it is still working fine into second, third & reverse. Only when you come to a stop and need to get it back into first. I'll know tonight for sure. :0)

I just called up "The Filling Station" and ordered a complete new unit for $150. Might as well fix it right vs jacking with it more and more. Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate it!

ouch! you should have checked the local FLAPS first.

I had called several and no one had what I was looking for prior to calling The Filling Station. I just now called one last place and they had one local for $49 bucks with a $5 core charge. Nice! Cancelled the other order and will have it in hand tomorrow night.

Well, I popped the top of of this reservoir and she was dang near bone dry. I filled her and gently pumped the clutch and the brakes and got some bubbles out. Once all the bubbles were out I took her for a drive and she's back running perfect!! I'm still going to install a new unit to solve the leak but beaing back on the road is a good feeling!! Thanks again!!
