I know I should simply wait until I have the truck delivered but I have a quandry and knowledge IS power after all.
I recently purchased a 1966 four wheel drive from pictures. I trust the guy to tell me the truth about the truck. He says he did a VIN decode and found out the engine was original to the truck but it has a V-6 and four on the floor. He said that all the rusty spots had been cut out and panels welded in by a proffessional body man. As far as I can tell the Chevrolets in 66 did not come with a V-6. So all I can figure is that this truck is a GMC with a 305 that has been put back together with chevy body parts. Sound feasable? Obviously a truck of this nature has little collector value, which is fine with me because I do not want to restore it. I want to drive it. The only thing I can't fathom is why anyone would want to take a GMC and turn it into a Chevrolet. Are they worth more that way? I'm getting a truck with a fantastic body for $2000 so it's not going to bother me any.

That happens a lot other than the grill and dash layout, they are not that different. Got a picture of the interior?

Parts availability. My guess is somebody repaired it with what was easy to find, or cheaper to buy.

Anything is possible with trucks this old. It's very common for hoods, grilles and fenders/emblems and tailgates to be swapped out for non-originals. Even GM did it when dealers replaced the 60-61 hoods with the later versions. Long ago these weren't collector vehicles, they were just appliances. To most people "correct" parts had no more significance than what type of handle gets replaced on a claw hammer.

Another possibility is the truck might really be a Chevy with an inline 6. It's amazing how many people don't know the difference between a V6 and an I6. It's kind of like trusting a sellers description. His idea of immaculate can be wildly different than yours. As Jake suggested, the dash will confirm the identity. Very few people change out the dash unless there is a lot of money and effort invested.

The PO doesn't really know much about the truck, but he does know engines. I've seen pics of the bed and body and it looks good enough. No rust, straight panels and shiny paint. The bed is all there and usable but I'm sure I'll be putting new wood in it, prabably finished in bed liner (the individual pieces of wood, not the bed as a whole) and refinishing the rails. This is my first foray into owning old iron since I got rid of my mid 60s Chryslers. What tanks those were. I have always been a GM guy and I need a 4X4 so this is the perfect mix. I'll get annoying over the next few years with questions but if you minded the questions, you wouldn't be here wouldja?
