Unfortunatly, the only successful part of this is the screwing on of the cable. I would sware that something right inside the trannie that sends the spin through the cable is broken. The tip of the cable is find, but I believe the femal end in the trannie is worn. Is this common and is there a way to repair it?

Insert the drive cable only and try to turn it, if it turns freely there's a problem. If it doesn't turn then the drive cable is probably too short, not engaging the tranny drive.
