The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Doors Door Hinge Pockets

Weather is getting nicer, so getting the urge to start working on the door hinges of my '57 3100, but could use some advice/ guidance.

It looks like the lower hinge pocket has rusted through from what I can see, is this something that should be/ can be fixed prior to replacing the hinge pins? If so, what is the process, parts from where, cost, etc? Right now my driver door seems to drop a bit after opening, so thinking maybe the pocket is what is causing the problem??? Thanks guys.

yes, that area is prone to rot - patch panels are available, both the face with the opening and the pocket box behind, like here

Thanks for the info. Thoughts on how to find someone to perform the repair? Type of welding suggested/ required, tolerance/ setup, etc?

hafta ask around for a good bodyman, look for a place that does restoration, or real metal work, as opposed to insurance claims where they just re & re panels, they'll have a good MIG and know what to do with it, not real difficult for someone with the skills

Is this beyond the capabilities of the average Joe with a MIG? I have a buddy who has done a lot of work on his own car [replacement panel fabrication and welding/ engine & drivetrain fabrication adn welding) but I don;t want to ask if it will be something in the end we both wish he had not started...

it isn't the easiest job to tackle, but someone who's done similar should understand how to go about it, just a matter of cutting out and welding in, but note that hole positions the door, so it needs to be pretty close
