Are 228 and 270 heads interchangeable ?

Yes, you can interchange the GMC heads but you could notice a difference in performance depending on which head is going on which block. Patrick's has all the info on this and I'm sure would gladly share any downside to what you want to do.

His website is pretty sparse but I think you can still get a free catalog and he has some info on identifying GMC heads in there (my catalog is several years old, I hope it's still in there).

The GMC P/N for a replacement head is 2071456 for 228,236,248,270 prior to 1953. As a rule of thumb, any head that was used on an engine with the domed pistons will interchange. Casting numbers can be 2136477,6107412, 2194819. A GMC from 53 on will use a flat piston and a different head.
