| | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 50 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 50 | Im working on my ignition and replacing pretty much everything.I went to put in the points and condensor and having a little trouble.I loosened the nut on the outside of the distributor that holds the wire from the coil,on the inside of the distributor where the condensor and points connect they will not come loose.I have pried on the stud to the point that im scared of breaking the plastic grommet.Am I missing some trick or is something else up?Never thought a set of points would hold me up lol.

I think if you look closely at the small stud with the nut removed you will see a small nut recessed in the plastic insulator. It will have two slots that require a special nut driver to loosen.
When you loosen that small nut, the attachment to the point spring will be released and you can change them out. Tim Lederman has info on that little nut...maybe he will see this and give us the hot ticket.

NAPA used to sell it.
You can make one out of a flat-blade screwdriver by putting a notch in the middle.
I'll look for a photo of the correct tool (or, I'll take a photo of one this weekend).

Works like a champ, and only takes a couple of minutes with a cutoff wheel in a Dremel tool to make. I've also used a short piece of 1/4" steel fuel line with the end ground to fit the distributor nut.
