I have a 235 with a single Carter, What sort of symptoms would result in carburetor choke not being adjusted properly?

I have been having problems with my motor running properly at high RPM's it cuts out and when I shift to a higher gear the engine losses power upon acceleration. Yesterday it was about 100 degrees outside and I fired up the engine and the problem wasn’t noticeable until after it warmed up a little (about a minute or less) and then it was back again. If its hot out side it seems to run way better until the engine warms up. If its cold out side the problem is always there.

I saw that after I posted. But my 59 doesn't have a vacuum on the wiper or the rear-end.

The butterfly on the choke should be closed when the engine is cold. When you start it up it should be about half open. As the engine warms up the choke plate should open all the way & stay that way untill it cools down.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Billybolt,

The symptoms you list seem inconsistent with each other. They don't seem to point to the choke. Checking the operation of the choke is straightforward. As Wrenchbender indicated, when cold it should be almost closed, and when warmed up should be fully open. When open, it should be firm and not able to flop closed by itself.

This is easy to check with the air cleaner removed.

Although the problem seems to be temperature dependent, and carburetion would be a suspect, ignition can't be overlooked.

Increased combustion chamber pressure coupled with a slug of fuel/air as you shift the truck and load the engine can cause a marginal ignition system to balk.

Take it for a spin again, and keep a open mind without focusing on Mr. Choke.

More carburetor problems have been corrected by ignition system repair than any other single action.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I had a problem with misfiring under load and at speed. It was an ignition problem. Replaced the rotor, cap, and plug wires (had installed new plugs previously). Runs great now. I found that choking the engine slightly, when warm, helped alleviate the symptoms prior to the tune up. Sounds like you may have the same symptoms. (I also started with the idea that it was the carb because it was running rich based on the condition of the plugs.)
