I want to use my 61 283 in my 38 is it possible to use a 350TH ? Is there an adaptor of some kind for the starter? or do I have to use a 2 speed powerglide ?

why not use a 700r4 instead of the 350?

I guess I could. There is still the bell housing mounted starter issue.

Lots of trans adaptors out there. Do a search. Is your motor stock? If not, I recommend a Torque convertor out of a corvette. Also some work will need to be done to the 700R4, so that you are not loading up the motor just crusing.

you don't need an adaptor. there is a another starter that bolts up into the block, rather than into the the bellhousing. one just has to make sure that they have the correct flywheel with the corresponding nbr of teeth to go with which starter

Are you sure padresag? I don't believe the 283 has the block mounts for the starter. I haven't had a 283 in a long time though.

all 63 and up do as I have 3 of them here. if it had the cast iron bellhousing(std trans) it bolted to the b/housing. a/powerglide, it bolted to the block. the aluminum case turboglide I presume also used a bolt to block starter from 57-61

For what it's worth, there's nothing special about a vette torque converter. Any chevy converter will work, you just have to get the right stall for your application.

After closer inspection a starter will bolt up to the block.Block date is A171,
3756519 casting, FOII8D vin, that makes it a 1961.So a 700r4 should bolt right up.I haven't played with a 283 in a while either, sorry for the runaround.

Exacty. Different Stalls for different vehichles and applications. There are numerous stalls available. Corvettes use a higher RPM stall.This will help get you into the "seat of the pants" launch, where as most chevy "passenger" cars you do not want that, just a nice smooth take off.

You seem to underestimate what a 283 will do. Remember the 283 and 327 were the engines they had to work with back in the 50's and 60's. Built right a 283 will produce easily 340HP

I am running a 283 with a TH350 in my 49 suburban. Everything bolts up. Starter bolts to the block.

I'm with Weeds. I have a '59 283 block with a TH 350 in my '49 1/2 ton. Everything, including the starter, bolted right up.

My 63 C10 came stock with the 283, Powerglide, and 3.73 rearend. I had no problem smoking the tires.

The 283 is one of the most underrated of the small block V8's. People tend to forget that it launched many of the early Corvettes, Impalas, and ChevyII's before the advent of the 327. It even held it's own pretty well after the 327 came out.

Nothin wrong with a 283. Twisters!!!! FOrged crank stock too.
