Are you saying that your engine stand is only has three wheels??

DO NOT USE A THREE POINT STAND!!!!

Get another engine stand or modify that one! Remove the engine from that stand. Then replace the stand or add another wheel/caster. I removed the single caster and added a cross piece of 18-24 inches. I've been there, next time it may very well kill you. There will be next time with only three points.

yeah, i didnt realize it was a 3 pt until i got it home and opened the box,it was late last night and i needed to get it off my truck(by myself of course!)so now that it is on the floor instead of my stand i will be able to return it and find a better 4 pt.besides those L6's are quite top heavy compared to a v8,etc.now to do some more research on some power goodies and tranny options.(keep the 465 or get a 700r4)

Tyler, I'm happy to hear that you decided on the 292. Your truck will be even more interesting I believe with the engine you decided on. Best of luck and lets see some pictures!

BTW, I'm looking at a truck tomorrow that has a stock 292. Perhaps I may be coming home with another truck!

I might as well toss in my 2 cents in on this. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big fan of the 250. I used to drive a ton and a half dump with a 292. It was rode hard and put up wet day in and day out. The only problem that I remember was a cracked exhaust manifold. It got 16 mpg loaded or empty, fast or slow, period. One of my 250s in a C-10 with a shell on the bed got 17-18 mpg and that went down over about 65 mph. Both engines had more than enough power to do the job, and pushed hard the C-10 would bark a puppy in second. What more could anyone want? The hop-up stuff doesn't give enough go for the $$$$ to suit me generally, and the shiny stuff will always be there.

Best wishes,

Les

We considered lots of possibilities when we were in the engine selection mode. Our daily driver '50 pickup (Walter) has a 1959 261 with a 5 speed and that has been a great driver and suprises folks with how quick he is - at least for the first 1/8 mile.
Pretty much everything else we run has a 292. We like the fact that it is kind of different and have not found it lacking in the performance department. Our '64 C20 (Otis) has a mild 292 with propane pistons, Edelebrock 4 barrel, Headman headers and a 5 speed. He will idle at 600 rpm and pulls to 5000. We use him to pull the flat bed trailer with our '56 Chevy 2 door sedan when we take it to the race track. The '56 also has a 292 with a bit more work done to it. It has a lump port head, quite a bit of cam, 11 to 1 compression and a 4 speed. It is our street car that we race some. It will run 13.50 at 100 mph in the quarter. We wanted to go one step further with the tried and true 292 so we built another '50 pickup (Kirby) but this one with a more serious 292. It has an aluminum head, Hilborn mechanical fuel injection, 4 speed and is a "haul it to the track to race it" kind of vehicle. He runs hard and straight and surprises lots of V8's. If you go to the DIY Gallery section there is a "Kirby Update" thread where I've posted a picture my wife took this summer at our local 1/4 mile track in Pierre, SD. He ran an 11.60 @ 114.9 mph and you will see just a little air under his front tires.
Yah, 292's will make all the power and torque you need - probably not as cheaply as a SBC but anybody can make hp with a SBC - right?!
