Do you guys generally take your axles to a machine shop and have them make new bronze bushings? Is there some company that is making new king pin sets?
Any info would be much appreciated..
Oh almost forgot.. i am working on a 1936 low cab big bolt of course! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 113 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 113 | | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | You might do a search on eBay for Chevy truck king pin. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 186 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 186 | Thanks guys, I have looked on ebay.. haven't found them yet. But I did email the listing that KC posted up!
Just need to figure out if it is the right set, He believes that they should rebuild a 31-51 big truck axle.
Does anyone know if this would be true? My gut tells me that there were probably different king pin configurations.
Does anyone have the manual for a 36 or could at least tell me what the proper Part number/ size would be for the king pins? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | I have a Chev book. I'm really not that familiar with the nomenclature. It lists series such as DB, EB, ED, FB and FD. If I can identify it, the GM part number will be the same p/n if GMC used it. I have lots of GMC books and I own all GMC. I can also scan the pages and email them to you. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 113 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 113 | My 36 1-1/2 ton GMC is a T-16 LA I believe it's the same axle. A friend has a 1934 1-1/2 ton Chevy is a PBOxxxxx Same axle. Hope it helps | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 | The FB and FD are 1936 identifiers. ED would be for '35, DB is '34 and so on.

21RD12 5817 does any one know what these numbers mean?
Also, the guy who has the king pins said a rough measurement of the pin is 15/16" x 5-3/32... My frame is in storage currently, this to me seems about what the pins should be... but i cant say for sure..
KC.. are you saying that ur 36gmc has the same axle as the 34 chevy?
I appreciate all the help guys! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 113 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 113 | Corpo, it really looks the same. I plan on measuring it tomorrow as well as Johnny T's 34 Chevy. If I get a chance I will go over to where the 35 GMC Johnny T and I bought and check it as well. All three are 1-1/2 tons. Johnny T wants to put disc brakes on his. We are also checking into some 1986 Furd van spindles I have down in the boneyard. You mentioned that you have a plan in mind for a disc conversion in the "front end swap" post. What do you have in mind? Also while I'm at it do you want any pictures or measurements? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,212 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,212 | CORPO, Here's the break down on your serial number 21RD12 5817 21 = Janesville Plant (1=Flint, 2=Tarrytown, 14=Baltimore,etc.) RD = 1936 1-1/2 ton Utility w/ 131" wheel base and Dual Wheels 12 = Built December 1935 5817 = Unit number starting at 1001 (you have the 4,817th RD built at Plant 21) Note...the first 1936 RD from Janesville was built 10-8-35 and was serial number 21RD10 1001. If you get exact measurements, it might turn out to be a very common part. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | You should be looking for GM King Pin kit #601019 for 1931-42 Utility, 1946-50 3/4, 1, 1 1/2 ton and 1951-52 3/4 and 1 ton. Jeff Thanks mike that is some great information, I have been past the Janesville plant a number of times.., cool knowing thats where the truck was built. I wasn't sure if that was even the vin number.. the state of WI issued a new vin for my truck... so I guess I wont run the original vin on the .. now I will have one for the next build Jeff, that sure helps alot.. I wasnt aware that you could get these parts new. Now the only thing... should i go with the NOS set at a lower cost or just go over to napa and pick up a new set? How do I determine if i should get the over sized pins? Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it! -Mike

Ive seen a bunch of kits with parts missing and I would rather have the complete set rather then be missing a cap or something you wont be able to find by itself.
To determine if its oversize you will need to disasseble the front end and pull out the old kingpins. You need to check the holes/bushings in the axle for wear or distortion to determine if the pins have worked their way through the bushings and buggered up the axle itself.

this is what he said is in the kit
"I don't know the proper names for this stuff but: The kit contains: 2- King Pins 2- King Pin Thrust Bearings 2- King Pin really thin wavy (~) Shims (washers?) 2- King Pin lock bolts w/nuts and lock washers 4- Round slightly cupped nickel size solid metal seals 4- Bronze bushings"
I dont know but that sounds like a complete kit..?
Your probably right.. it might be better to just go over to napa...
Thanks again for all the help guys | | |
