What is the best MPG transmission for an 1956 Chevy 235? What adapters, etc. are needed?

the only transmission choice that can improve mileage is an over drive .... or better rear gears

MPG varries a lot by the driver, speed, the size of the truck, and the load the truck is carrying or towing. Your question isn't complete, as we don't know what size the truck is you are asking about, and how you intend to drive it.

Along with what daddy said, diff. ratio and tire size are needed factors that will come into play when choosing a trans.
