Please excuse my ignorance. I'm new at this and I don't even have a shop manual yet...
Anyways, I am in the process of stripping down my 53 1/2 ton. Engine is out and at this point I need to remove the driveshaft from the rear end torque tube. Is opening the pumpkin the only way to do this? Is there anything I should know before I tear it apart. Note that I will not be using this part as I will upgrade to an open drive donor rear end in the future.
Thanks for your help...Mario

Mario,

I removed the torque tube from my '61 fairly easy, you need a good sturdy pair of pliers to take the rings off the U-joints. I'm not much help, but if you are going to replace the u joints, just cut em off with a cutoff wheel and the tube will remove without hesitation. They're pretty cheap these days to replace. Hope this helps more than it hinders.

A stock '53 1/2 ton will have an enclosed driveshaft (a torque-tube). The u-joint cover/bell/enclosure is slid towards the back to expose the u-joint. The u-joint is held to the yoke with 4 small bolts that are held in place with retainer clips.

A stock 1961 would have an open driveshaft. U-joints would have clips.

Ahhhh,

Thanks. I thought they were all the same. That's why I love this place. Lots of knowledge.

Yeah thanks.
That torque tube has got to go...
Hopefully I can play with it a bit today.
