For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 42 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 42 | Removed tank from cab. Want to continue to use my truck as mostly just an ole truck, with some nice modifications and updates here and there. So, I would prefer not to fill tank through the bed. I am looking at an underbed tank that has side fill option. It looks like I could run the fill tube out through fender. But I would appreciate hearing from folks who have already done either the above or some other out of cab tank placement and no through bed fill. All help appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | I piped mine out to the fender behind the rear tire and used the tank and filler from a 73 suburban along with the rest of the suburban frame and drivetrain. I don't know how well it would work with an original frame. If you want some pictures, let me know. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 42 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 42 | Would apprecite some photos. But, like you, I wonder how it would work with the original frame. Was it much effort making the piping in the fender look and work correctly?
Thanks. Williejoebob | | | | | | ZooKeeper Unregistered | | ZooKeeper Unregistered | I used a Suburban/Blazer(40gallon) tank on a 54 I did for a friend years ago. You'll have to move the rear frame brace to the very rear of the frame, put a brace in front of the tank & across the top to hold it in and I used the stock Burb gas straps to hold it in from the bottom, trim the frame on the sides so the tank would fit w/a 40gallon tank (a smaller tank you may not have to) along w/boxing a small part of the frame & put a "U" shaped gusset on top of the frame where the filler neck will go. And yes the filler neck was in the rear fender, sorry no pics...Joe | | | | | Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 42 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 42 | Joe: Thanks. Was it much trouble getting the filler neck to turn out okay?

williejoebob Nope, I used part of the stock filler neck & stock body rubber bushing for it, some exhaust pipe for the curves going to the filler neck, large diameter gas hose that fit the pipe to the filler neck. PLUS using a late model tank lets you have a vent in the tank so you get less of chance of a splash back when filling it....Joe | | |
