I know I have disconnect the torque tube and universal joint from rear of transmission. My question is Do I have to disconnect the torgue tube from the rear end also? I plan to use a transmission jack and am wondering if the torque tube is just disconnected from rear of transmission if their will be enough room to back the transmission out of the bell housing.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 | I wouldn't think it would be much different than removing a 3 speed, and when I had to remove my 3 speed, I just disconnected the torque tube at the rear of the transmission. Make sure that your truck is raised by it's frame so that the torque tube doesn't slam down when it's disconnected. I put a floor jack under the front of the torque tube so that I could lower it just enough to back out the transmission.

Another option for getting the torque tube completely out of the way is: after disconnecting the u-joint and pushing the rear yoke backwards, pushjack the torque-tube upwards and hold it high up by placing a 2x4 cross-wise between the frame rails and under the torque-tube. This way, no jack is in the way under the torque-tube.

It's a lot more maneuverable than a transmission jack that way, plus that method works when the truck is sitting in a wet hayfield, overloaded with square bales, with a burned-out clutch and the tires half-buried in the mud! Don't ask me how I know that!

I was thinking of building some kind of derek over the transmission opening, but was concerned about having enough clearance. I never thought of the window trick, that is priceless!
