What adhesive is recomended to attach a ABS headliner to the inside roof of my cab?

HI.... I'm just about ready to install my one piece ABS liner...and hope you get a reply from somebody who has installed one...I just finished my firewall and floor so next the headliner...mine will remain black in color its going on my 54 3100 and any suggestions as how to install it would be most welcome...Steve

I don't know if it was correct but I used spray contact cement from a rattle can with good results so far.

I made my own abs plastic head liner and I didn't glue it at all. Mine is secured by the rear and front trim pieces. The sides are secured by the weather stripping. We glued a piece of suede over the abs plastic, but not to the inside roof. Here are some photos.

Coach-Frank... for some reason your photos can not be accessed. On my 54 cab I have a retainer strip at the rear and no trim piece at the front windshield. As I understand it the one piece headliner tucks in behind the windshields rubber strip which also holds the windshield in place?....Do you or anyone else know if that is correct? I have never seen one of these ABS headliners installed and the instructions leave a lot to be desired and we will not use any glue also....Thanks, Steve

Thanks Steve, Murphy thinks she is a human. I am starting to believe she is at least part human. She watches more tv than anyone in the house. Her favorite channel, animal channel of course.

Chevy s10, I have no idea what year. We had it recovered by a friend of mine.

Sounds like Gazim did okay with spray contact cement.

I use High-Temp Adhesive Spray for anything in the interior ... anything else will not hold.

Coach-Frank -- What did you use to glue the faux-suede to your headliner with?

Camie 397 adhesive. A professional auto interior shop adhesive.

i use 3M Hi tak 76 on all my headliners it doesn't break down in the heat.

Wish I could remember what I used. All I know it was 3M spray I got at home depot. and it is going on its 2nd year. Maybe I will be looking for the hi temp stuff this summer?

If you're going on your 2nd year and nothings coming down, then you must have used high-temp, gazim. Anything else would start coming apart in just a few days ... even in cold weather.

I hope I can jump in here to ask a question. I have a 1957 Chevy 3100. I am restoring the truck back to 100% stock. I have ordered 2 different headliners from 2 different companies Classic Parts of America and Truck Parts out of Orange County. I have yet to find an exact reproduction of the orginal. Is there anyone out there still make the exact same original? Or should I take it to an upholstery shop to see if they can duplicate?

I've never seen a real repro of the TF headliner, all plastic now - a good upholstry shop might come close but I doubt they'd be able to come up with the right jute backing, or the correct waffle pattern material

What did Chevy use originally? Looks like some type of black tar ..

yeah, it was some kind of tarry stuff like an undercoating, probably brushed on like roofing lap cement, seems to have gotten brittle with age - I'm using the rubberized rocker guard spray on the inside of the bus skin, helps stop condensation, but I think it sets up too fast to be useable as a glue for overhead

Ordered the performance hi-temp trim adhesive spray from "Your Auto Trim Store"
Cost 9 bucks to buy 13 bucks to ship UPS to California.

I just was looking at the ingredients of the Performance High Temp Trim Adhesive. It contains acetone. Now as far as i know acetone is a paint remover. The top of my cab is painted. Should I worry about this?

I wouldn't worry - the acetone is likely part of the setting process, it evaporates rapidly, and if there would be a problem with using it on painted surfaces there'd be a warning on the can as it's intended for gluing things on vehicles - see here - and hey! how'dya get that shipped to California?

What material did you use for this? Where did you get it? Do you have to have an old headliner to use as a pattern or is there some way to figure it out?

The adhesive I bought is a great product! My friend and I sprayed it on to the original headliner jute and let it tack up in the 2 minutes the directions said to follow. We learned not to spray it on in direct sun. By the time we got it to the cab, it was dry. So, we then sprayed in the shade and went right to the cab roof. It is very fast in drying. If you do this, make sure you have a least 2 people and line up the headliner. Installing the rubber molding around the liner was the hardest part...lost of soap! IN
