I have a 1950 1/2 ton Chevrolet pickup with stock drivetrain. I am pulling the locked up 216.5 and have access to a good 250. I would really like to keep my stock transmission and rearend for now. Can I make a 250 work? What mods would I need to do? Thanks for the help.

You'll need to find the bell housing for a '63 + truck with the Muncie 4 speed tranny as they used that up to'68 that I know of...

Engine Mounts will need to be fabricated too .

it's far easier to hunt the Task Force boards and find a good 235 takeout from a hot rodder , these are alwaay very cheap , even fully rebuilt 235's don't go over $500.00.....

Good used ones only cost $150.00 + / - , fan to clutch , check the older ads as these engines will still be sitting there in three years if not scrapped.

Good luck hunting ! .

Brian,

The response you received from vwnate1 is correct. At a minimum, you will need to fabricate motor mounts etc.

The combination you're asking about is a good set-up. I had an early 70's 250, stock 4-speed, and torque tube rear-end in a 52 that I recently sold.

It would run circles around my 216 and "early" 235. I also liked it because it came with hardened valve seats (for unleaded gas) and a stock HEI ignition system.

I'd weigh your abilities to fabricate the mounts etc. and the cost of the engine your looking at to what you find looking for a 235.

I don't imagine you'll be that far apart $$ wise, as most people that have the 250's are generally looking to practically give them away as well.

The 235 is probably gonna require that you either fabricate new motor mounts or drill out the holes to front mount it. Then you still have to work with clearance issues on the water pump.

Either way, it can be done, and it shouldn't be that difficult.

I think the bellhousing search is a little wider than '63+. The bellhousing from a '55 to '68 V-8 powered truck will work.

I'll also add that you will either want the bellhousing crossmember from a '54 or '55 1st pickup or you will need to make adapters to mount the bellhousing on your existing bellhousing.

OLDSUB IS CORRECT, REGARDING THE FRONT MOUNT THERE ARE TWO TREADED HOLES IN THE FRONT OF THE BLOCK ON EACH SIDE OF THE CRANK SHAFT PULLEY. YOU CAN MAKE A HORSESHOE MOTOR MOUNT BRACKET SO YOU CAN MOUNT THE MOTOR LIKE A STOCK FRONT MOUNT. USE A 54 TRUCK BELL HOUSING X MEMBER AND A 1955-59 V8 BELL HOUSING. YOU CAN USE ONE OF THE THREADED HOLES ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE BLOCK FOR YOUR GAS LINKAGE SWIVEL TO HOOK IT UP LIKE STOCK. RUNNING A 250 WILL BE WORTH THE XTRA WORK.
