You'll see the hole in the bell housing and in that hole you'll see a pointer .as you turn the engine over in the right direction you'l see a triangle on the flywheel (TDC)after that you'll see the ball it looks like a ball bearing pressed into the fly wheel when the pointer and the ball are lined up thats your timming mark after you get her running that is what you'll se with the timing light also.

so i line the pointer up with the ball embedded??? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,778 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,778 | Yes, line the pointer up with the ball, after being sure the #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke. When you can feel pressure in the cylinder by putting your finger over the #1 plug hole as the engine turns, you're on the right track. Once the ball lines up with the pointer turn the distributor housing clockwise until the points close, then turn it back CCW until they just barely open. If you want to get it exact, use a test light on the distributor primary wire. With the points closed and the ignition switch on, the light will go out. Turn the dizzy housing counterclockwise until the light just comes on, and you'll be timed close enough to start. Jerry

It should be point near the cap terminal that feeds #1 or the front cylinder. The standard position for this wire on the cap is pointing out sideways on the non engine side of the cap. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 105 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 105 | well when i pulled the distributor to look at it and install a new vacumme advance and put it back in i now i lined it up in the same spot but i had to loosen up things and turn it so that rotor was facing #1 put things back together and she fired right up. now if i could just get it to quite crackly thru the carb when i have it at half throttle and more when i'm going down the road. it doesn't want to hills very well.
in installed one of Tom Langdons holly/weber carbs. doesn't leak like the rochester carb did but can't go very fast without it crackling. guess i will have to email him | | |
