The best you can do is to put a ohm meter between the wire coming from the points and ground ,after you have the rotor aimed at the # 1 spark plug wire ,and the timming marks lined up ,ball on pointer, also you have to make sure your on the compression stroke of #1 cly.take the plug out and put your finger over the hole when you feel the air pushing on your finger start looking at the pointer and line up the ball.Take the wire off the coil that goes to the dis. put an ohm meter between that wire and a ground ,move the dis. one way and the other untill the points are just opening the ohm meter reads 0 that will get you close enough to start than you can hook up a timing light and set the timming to spec.

The timming marks are on the bell housing and the flywheel there is a hole just to the left of the engine facing the front on the same side as the dis. You'll see the hole in the bell housing and in that hole you'll see a pointer .as you turn the engine over in the right direction you'l see a triangle on the flywheel (TDC)after that you'll see the ball it looks like a ball bearing pressed into the fly wheel when the pointer and the ball are lined up thats your timming mark after you get her running that is what you'll se with the timing light also.

ok i just found it. now if the rotor isn't pointing towards the front or number 1 sparkplug then i need to pull it and reposition it?
now it has to be at that mark and having expelled air out the front spark plug hole?? as i've got that one pulled at the moment..

Yes, line the pointer up with the ball, after being sure the #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke. When you can feel pressure in the cylinder by putting your finger over the #1 plug hole as the engine turns, you're on the right track. Once the ball lines up with the pointer turn the distributor housing clockwise until the points close, then turn it back CCW until they just barely open. If you want to get it exact, use a test light on the distributor primary wire. With the points closed and the ignition switch on, the light will go out. Turn the dizzy housing counterclockwise until the light just comes on, and you'll be timed close enough to start.

I think he asked about where the rotor should be pointing. It should be point near the cap terminal that feeds #1 or the front cylinder. The standard position for this wire on the cap is pointing out sideways on the non engine side of the cap.

well when i pulled the distributor to look at it and install a new vacumme advance and put it back in i now i lined it up in the same spot but i had to loosen up things and turn it so that rotor was facing #1 put things back together and she fired right up.
now if i could just get it to quite crackly thru the carb when i have it at half throttle and more when i'm going down the road. it doesn't want to hills very well.

in installed one of Tom Langdons holly/weber carbs. doesn't leak like the rochester carb did but can't go very fast without it crackling. guess i will have to email him
