I pulled the tranny and replaced the pilot bushing. It seems the input shaft was misaligned caused by the worn bushing and a weak tranny mount. | | |

Low gear will always be louder than the other gears as it is straight cut, but it shouldn't exactly howl. Broken mount shouldn't affect gear sound. | | |
