I am going to install a 350 turbo tranny out of a 83 3/4 ton in a 64 SWB fleetside, the 230 checks out well and just want to be sure we can do this without no big problem. Am new to this so need some help with someone who knows alot more than I do. Also any ideas on carburation and headers for this 230. thanks

There are 2 types of TH350: long tailshaft and short tailshaft. They can be interchanged, but the driveshaft length has to be adjusted accordingly. The crossmember and tranny mount might be different...I'm not positive on that.

Best way to find out if the tranny and driveshaft will be compatible is to measure both transmissions from the front edge of the bellhousing to the end of the tailshaft. It'll be immediately apparent if they aren't the same. The long shaft tranny is quite a bit longer.

I put an Offy intake manifold, Carter 625 AFB carb and Hedman headers on my 64's 292 motor. The 230 is pretty much the same motor, except that the block isn't as tall. You could use the same setup, but I'd go with a 500 CFM carb at the max (and maybe a 390) for the 230.

There are pics of my truck's "process" on my website. The url's in my sig.

Good luck with your project.

My friend has a'66 and swapped his powerglide for a turbo 350 and just had to adjust his column shifter. I think he had a hard time getting into low though. Everything went in easy. I believe he used a short tailshaft.

ok I have been wrong the trans is a TH400 out of a 83 3/4 ton camper special the 64 PU has a 230 cid with a 4 speed .Will that 400 trans with a new crossmember and trans cooler and shortened drive shaft, bolt up to the 230 inliner without a lot of problems. Also if it works any ideas on a shifter?

if the torque converter bolt pattern is the same.you will need a 230 flexplate.the starter may work if both flexplates have the same number of teeth.i would use a turbo 200 instead.that 400 will suck up a lot of horsepower.
