I had the carb rebuilt and I was having problems with the in line fuel filter only filling up half way which I had posted earlier. At the same time I replaced the fuel pump, the short piece of gas from the tank, cleaned out the fuel lines, replaced the dist. cap, points , condenser, plug and plug wires and reset the timing. Only after playing around with the choke, I found that it will purr like a kitten with the choke half closed and the fuel filter is now staying full. What gives? By the way, the heat riser is working.

I think you have some particles plugging some passages in the carburetor and the float level is too low. Have you tried turning out the mixture screw to richen up the mixture? Sounds like your running really lean.

If the engine runs nicely with half choke, then obviously you have a lean condition. That condition could be something in the carburetor, but it could also be a vacuum issue (vacuum leak at a gasket, vacuum advance, etc.). Before re-rebuilding the carb, would at least look at the vacuum.
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. If you truly believe "one size fits all," try walking a mile in your spouse's shoes! The Carburetor Shop | | |
