Installing a 1996 Lt1 v/8(chevy) engine in a stock 1950 chevy 3100 What bellhousing could be used? What flywheel ? E-mails welcome [email protected]

Hy bob fortner, a truck cast iron bellhousing from a V8 from 55 - 67? is open on the bottom and will provide some clearance around the crossmember, or if you would like to position the rear of the engine, you could use the engine rear crossmember from a 54 - 55a in conjunction with the truck cast iron bellhousing, those two items when used together will position the rear of the engine. As to the flywheel, you can use any V8 flywheel except the ones for a small block 400 or big block 454, that is appropriate for the clutch you want to use, and will allow the starter, which bolts to the bellhousing to engage the flywheel, hope that helps.

I think that the later engines, 87 up with the one piece rear main seal use a different flywheel. I'm not sure if it the bolt pattern or the hub that is different. I ran into this problem with installing a newer engine in an 81 Corvette. We had to use the newer flex plate. It should be the same problem with the early flywheel.

Yes they use a different flywheel. The 86 up has counter weights on it also.

See the Tech Tip on bell housings and flywheels for more info, but Use any about '56 to '67 V-8 TRUCK b/housing. Keep the starter and flywheel from the new engine on that engine. Flywheel Diameter is the same back to '56 with very few exceptions and so is clutch bolt circle. You will have to juggle cross members, though.
