I have a 64' 4x4, with a 292, four speed, and 3:73 gears.(all original). I have decided to keep this truck, and sell the 71 4x4. I know how well this truck will pull, but 3-4 times a year, I need to pull my trailer(car hauler). I don't need or want to speed down the highway, but don't want to be too helpless either. I recently rebuilt this motor, so I am hesitant to tear into it, after all that work. Would a dual 2b intake, with headers make any difference? or would this be too much for the stock cam? I've seen where some have suggested using an rv cam. Thanks for any advice!

I've pulled car trailer with a 65 C30 with full size utility box on it. Long grade down to 35 mph in 3rd just held it there. Pulled a 69 C20 out of the N. CA hills 20 miles of nasty dirt road, beat the crap out of the rear bumper, ended up replacing it. On the freeway I usually find a big truck doing 55-60 mph and just hang with it. I'm not partial to dual carbs unless they're for show then the more the better. I'd put a small Edelbrock 4 barrel on with an Offy manifold.

I don't own a vehicle that isn't old enough to drink.

Do you think the setup you suggested would work o.k. with the rest of the engine being stock? I've been accused of over analizing before, I'm just afraid the stock duration would not take the best advantage of the new set up, or would it be o.k.? Thanks!

he'll be able to tell you the difference you'll feel, i think.
check the gallery, he has a link to his website where he has multiple pages of great info.
good luck, and later days.

Dual 2bls gives you better distribution but the 4bl is less messing around sychronizing adjustments. I think you will notice a significant difference even with the stock cam. If you go with the 2bls the Holley-Webers from Stovebolt Engine Co. are great. They're a 2 stage 2bl (like half a 4bl) so mileage is good and performance improved. They are also very reasonable. He sells rebuilt ones for $65 but you will need an adaptor and I think those are $15. I run a pair of them on my 261 with a little cam and they are a nice combination.

I agree with Arpee about the 4-barrel being less of a hassle to adjust than dual 2-barrels. I'm running a Carter 625, which is essentially the same thing as an Edelbrock 1406 (600 CFM.) They're real easy to adjust and once set up hardly ever need tweeking.
My gut feeling is that the stock exhaust manifold is WAY too restrictive. I'm basing that on the sound of the exhaust with the stock manifold and a straight pipe vs. the headers. With the stock manifold, I couldn't tell that it WAS a straight pipe. But with the headers, there was no doubt. I had to add mufflers.
My website url is in my sig.
There's info there on the carb/exhaust installation. a rule of thumb that works for me is, "would I do it again if I had it to do over?" the answer for me is "absolutely. In a heartbeat."
