The side cowl vent on my 49 is flopping around loose like the hinge has let go. The lever on the inside is still connected to the outside vent cover, but the screws holding it on are seized. I can cut the screws off with my dremel tool but how do you repair the hinge, or what else is wrong.

Hi, Denny, I have every thing that is in the photo. My problem is on the inside where the C brackets go to the hinge. The hinge dose not appear to be attached to anything.I had the drivers door off but the view was blocked by the hinge pocket.

I really don't know what you're talking about. The hinge section of the vent door is the bracket that is attached with the two clutch head screws in the picture. It is screwed to the bracket that is tack welded inside the outer cowl panel before it is installed. If that has been broken or rusted off then you have a bigger problem than your vent flopping around, you need to remove the outer panel to restor that bracket.

The early cowl vents have a spring inside them that helps keep everything tight open or closed. The later vent mid-49 on does not have this spring. On the early version like yours you will notice inside on the cowl it has a plate installed around the handle later versions eliminate this plate and have a detent that the handle locks into. I am parting an early 49 right now (6SWL 1100) that has these items I will shoot some pictures.

seen the vent that your describing and I'd like to add it to my reference file.
I was under the impression that they were all the same till they discontinued them.

I will shoot some tonight Denny and post them tomorrow. Interestingly enough on this early truck there are very few clutch heads mostly phillips they are on this vent as well.

Ok gang here are the pictures: The 47-late-49 style vent is shown installed and then the pieces afterward. There is a comparison of my 50' interior handle/slot as well. Hope this helps, as stated no clutch heads on this all phillips screws.

Hey thanks Brad, looks like the same as the later vents except for the fact that it has a spring to close it. The hinge and the bracket that it mounts to looks just like the one on my '50.

Hi, Denny and Brad, To Denny, from what you say, the hinge has come free of the outer panel and I agree. To Brad your pictures are great and #5shows what is in my truck with springs and Phillips head screws. My truck was built on July 15 1949 in the Oshawa ONT. plant, Canada. Thanks for the help,

I just got around to taking a picture of the handles you will notice they are different as well. I am adding this handle and the unique little bracket on the inside cowl to my 50. The handle bolts right up but does not quite lock without some modification. Anyway for your reference.

hey to all. I had the same problem on my 1949 chevy truck. You can go inside the driver side, with a small grinder (reall small) and get just below the vent handel and with the cut off wheel grind back towards the door gasket. Go to the to of the upper most vent , where it is still flat and cut 3 (Three) sides. That lets you see inside where the bracket is supposed to be welded. If you can find the old welds you can line it up with those. A couple of c-clamps to hold it from the outside and you can reach inside and tack it back on. I did the about 1-week ago. Bad part. You will have to repaint the cowel panel. Just part where th weld blisters the paint. To me it's better than taking off the outer panel. Hope this helps.

Another file update for you the 48 is different still it has no detent on the small inner panel and a felt gasket underneath (see pictures).
