anybody have any idea how the heater/defroster assembly that is 12 volts works. it is the one that looks like a square box that is aftermarket. comes with everything to hook it up. mine in my 54 chevy pickup is leaking pretty good and also it defrosts the front windshield good just not the side windows when i'm in it driving. makes a seeing hazard. wasn't sure how well it worked in the northern part of the us. im in missouri and it has been getting cold. the little heater doesn't do to bad but could do better.

If it is leaking anti freeze then your heater core is bad and you will need to remove it and either get a new one or take it to a radiator shop for repair. It's not likely that you will ever get a heater that will clear the side windows. While you have the heater out of the truck clean those windows real good they probably have an anti-freeze film on them and then get some rainx and give them a good wipe-down. That should help with side visibility in bad weather.
The heater is a pretty simple piece and you should have no trouble taking it apart and seeing how it works.

RainX should not be used on inside of the windows.

Got this "I'm talking about the rain-x for outside the glass, not the anti fog stuff. I've never tried the anti fog stuff, but I have a neighbor that got overzealous and applied regular rain-x to the inside of his glass and had problems with haze forming on the inside glass." from here. I also noted complaints about the smell on other forums. Personally I never thought about using it inside. They do make an anti fog rain-x for the inside.

It will fog the inside glass and it won't wipe off. My brother made the mistake.

Did he try using Alcohol to clean the windows?

Amway Chrome and Glass cleaner will take off water spots and polish your glass, I can't imagine rain-ex would remain after applying the C&G cleaner from Amway.
