Pull the rear cover & see what you have. There should be no up or down freeplay in the yoke. There should be no side to side motion in the carrier. Just because there is rotational free play at the yoke does not mean the free play is between the ring and pinion. There can be a lot of free play in the spider gears and axle splines that can give you the same feel as free play when turning the yoke.
