#60431 05/14/2006 2:19 AM | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 50 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 50 | Folks - I have read at least 50 posts on the subject of flywheel tooth count on 216/235 swaps, the 6V flywheel has 139 teeth and the 12V Flywheel has 168. I have yet to find a post on tooth count and pinion dimensions on the 12V starter that matches the 168 tooth flywheel. Now here is the real mystery to me, If you look in NAPA's on-line store and search starters for an early 60's chevy truck w 235 you will get a part number 44-0642 rebuilt 12V starter, and a part number 6003015 168 tooth ring gear to replace your worn flywheel gear if you need it. I have the new starter and the pinion is 9 teeth and it is the same dimension as the pinion on an old starter I have for the 216 139 tooth flywheel I'm changing out. Can someone tell me tooth count and O.D. of a 12V starter for a 168 tooth flywheel if you have one handly on the bench. Something is screwy here and I can't figure it out and would appreciate any help I can get on this. Regards,

The difference is the angle of the teeth on the starter shaft. If you look closely, you can tell there is a difference. There may be some other differences in the units that will more easily identify what the unit is for, but counting the teeth isn't going to answer the question. That's all there is to it! Joe

Looking at the old 139 tooth starter gear along the starter shaft axis the teeth appear to be cut much straighter and more of a pyramid shape than the new starter for the 168 tooth flywheel which appears to curve at the ends as if it is designed to "screw" into the teeth as the starter is engaged...this also clears up what I thought was a mistake on the NAPA site. For anyone interested I found this interesting web site that lists many OEM part numbers for with dimensions for flywheel ring gears. www.ringgearindia.com/docs/products.asp Thanks agian - Bug
