I just recently aquired a 1965 Chevy C10 Fleetside Truck with a 283 and a 2-speed automatic Powerglide transmission. I was told that the truck ran before it was stored and had it towed to my house. The tailpipe was disconnected where it meets with the exhaust pipe "Y" joint near the oil filter. I reconnected the tailpipe to the exhaust pipe "Y" and soon discovered that I could no longer shift the transmission out of park. When I got underneath the vehicle I discovered that the shift arm coming out of the transmission was now sitting up against the now connected tailpipe/exhaust pipe. Has anyone experienced this issue? I belive all the parts are original. I am not sure if the previous owner had the transmission out and maybe put the shift linkage back incorrectly or if there is an extension on the exhaust pipe missing that might alter the exhaust pipe enough to clear the shift arm. Any suggestions?

Its unlikely the original exhaust is still in place on a 45 year old truck that has remained in use. A picture or two might help a lot.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...
