The oil filter was an option.
Usually they were mounted on the intake manifold. Here is a
pic. You can see the oil filter on the left, the orange canister.

Jim Carter Antique Truck Parts is one of the vendors that sells by-pass oil filters (he has new and used filters). He also sells the lines. You will need a T-joint so the oil line and oil sender line can be connected at the same time.

Here is an installation diagram for a 1953 automobile oil filter. This diagram is also used for the 1954 truck oil filter.

I have seen the kind that look like a beehive it has rings around it. This one is OK also. I will look in my classic parts catalog also. I'm going to have to place another order I can see that right now.

Mark,

Is your filter similar to the one in the installation diagram I posted above?

No it is a chunk of aluminum that has been machined to except the external screw on type of filters found on most vehicals. Ithas a restrictor port in the filter. I can vet them at most auto parts stores. It has 3 hols to mount it on the firewall or else where. On the side at the top there is an inlet and outlet. Looks like 1/4 inch fittings.
On my 235 motor I see the port that has a t on it 1 runs to oil pressure gauge the other has a copper line runs up over motor and connects into the head just below valve cover. There is also a 1/4 inch plug about 10 infusion or so ahead of the line/ hole that goes to gauge.

The one marked to filter inlet. That would be to the pressure gauge ?? It sure looks like it. The outlet hole is the one I have with a plug in it. Looks like any way as I might be able to use the 2 holes above it to mount the filter assembly.

Yes, that port ("to filter inlet") is shown in the installation sheet, above, as the location of the "T" fitting for the oil "gage" line.

Mark,

I mounted mine off the motor mount boss.
Here's a pic.
If you want to do something similar, here are the bolt patterns.
I had trouble bending the short hard line until I found these tube bending pliers.
I used a 1/16" restrictor hole in the return fitting.

regards,
Leon

The directions tell me to use a filter with a restrictor built into it. If it is inline does that work better?

If you want to use a spin-on filter to make you feel better about having filtered oil, that's good. The problem with most of them is the size of the particles they remove. The micron size of a full-flow filter is so large that it only traps the big stuff. The original-equipment canister type filter had a much finer filtration built into the filter because the oil did not have to flow fast enough to supply the bearings with enough oil to keep the engine lubricated. The oil was well-filtered, and then simply drained back into the oil pan. One of the industrial-type filter manufacturers like Wix or Baldwin probably has a spin-on filter that has a 5 micron or smaller element that will actually do some filtering in a bypass application. Using a full-flow filter in a bypass situation makes an engine owner feel good, but it does little, if anything to really filter the oil.

Several members here have canister type filters for sale or trade, and they're on Ebay all the time. Some even come with the correct pressure and return lines included in the deal. Try putting a post in the "parts wanted" forum, and I'll bet you get a bite in a matter of hours.
