Well Gentlemen, this is the start to my 1949 3600 build. Superfly contacted me out of left field to get this truck. I was seriously going to pass until he said he could haul it. The cab I had was already being fit with patch panels (and needed to be re-done). This was completely cheaper than fixing the floor.

We start with the clip from the 3800 I got from my brother. This, the title, long running boards, doors and battery cover are all I have left from the original deal.

Here is the new truck in my shop

There is some real nice color on the firewall. It cleaned up pretty good with some cleaner wax.

My thought is, this truck came from the factory as a flat bed or inteded that way. The short running boards and the dark green paint on the stake pockets lead me to believe the bed was added later. I have the full length 3800 boards, I think I'm going to shorten them to have a 2 piece running board.

I ended up taking alot of rat crap and nesting out. Under the seat was packed and a layer over the floorboards.

Here it is all cleaned up.

Plans are real basic for this rig.

292 inline 6

Scott Danforth's cross member kit.

Not going to try and reinvent the AD pickup. I want it to be built safe, minimal cost and frills. Manual brakes, manual rack & pinion and S-10 rear axle. Trying to keep the original column and shifter in place are a high priority.

Mondays progress. Disassembly. Steering gear is off, column saved (may need to look for a better wheel), shifter off and saved, drivers door off, 2 more clutch head screwdrivers ordered.

Tuesday before work I got the passenger door off. Leaving the hinge on the door made it a little dicey trying to get the top one out. Resting the engine hoist in the window track helped keep it stable while unbolting. But it was all back work when she got loose. Picked up my other 2 clutch screwdrivers on the way to work. Looks like I will have a date with the shovel after work, frickin' snow.

Wednesday:
After blowing a bunch of snow out of the driveway, I got down to the shop for a little bit before work. Out of the 4 clutch drivers I picked up none of them fit what I was trying to do, get the floor panel off from over the transmission.

Solution, get a good straight screwdriver that fits snug in the clutch while keeping downward pressure try to turn. If it doesn't feel like it wants to turn use a crescent wrench or vice grip for added leverage.

The panel came off and I was able to go to work knowing something was accomplished.

After work I picked up Jaime who was doing a trucking run through my town. We did more bench building than work but did get the roof popped back out and looking smooth.

Sunday brought major progress.

Now to get the brackets stripped off to ready the frame for the SD AD IFS crossmember.

Thursday: I met with the welder and got a good price. I will do all the fitment and he will just have to weld. He really liked the kit and thinks it will be easier than the Hiedt's front he did for another guy.

I got all the bracketry off the passenger side frame rail and sanded it down.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project016.jpg

Between the red lines is really only needed for prep. I sanded inside the rail and underneath too.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project018.jpg

The bell housing crossmember is in the way a little bit. It will be removed after the cross member is welded in. This is the part that is in the way.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project018.jpg

Here it is removed from the other side.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project019.jpg

A bracket needs to be welded inside the frame rail for support. Scott gives very detailed measurements of where it needs to be. After studying the install manual, I'll show you the dummy way. Again on the passenger frame rail, (right side is front) the red circle shows the hole the bracket needs to be placed over. The large hole is where the brake line came out.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project021.jpg

Looking inside the rail, (left is front) the bend goes to the front.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project022.jpg

Next, I will prep the other side. Then fit the boxing plates.

Sunday: Got more accomplished.

Started getting things roughed in. The front of the frame needs a little notch. It is measured from the front edge of the frame. At first I was how the hell?? But, here is how. Use a welding magnet and fish the tape through the frame.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project025.jpg

Then your masking tape marks the notch.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project024.jpg

Cut out.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project023.jpg

My boxing plates ended up being a little long (which is way better than short). I set them up in the frame located where they should end, then set up for a 3 inch hole. (forgot to grab camera)

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project026.jpg

Then made finishing cut on the bandsaw.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project027.jpg

Test fit with my son the hand model. I wonder what he thinks of this?

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project029.jpg

For the hell of it we slid the crossmember up there.

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project031.jpg

http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq42/todd55021/1949%20Chevrolet%20pu/project030.jpg

Next up is more grinding, fitting and getting the welder to come in.

Not yet, however many are close to being finished both on the Stovebolt and on the HAMB.

I'll get the sled dogs ready for the treck. But you can start without me. I'll be all brandy'd up when I get there, if I don't take a wrong turn.

your springs may have taken a set. I know when I did my S-10 a few years back, the stock springs were almost 2" shorter than the replacments I got from the FLAPS. They were about $35 each.

Chuck, didnt forget about your template for the 1.5" drop with the 3" rake. We have been busy at work and I was in meetings all week.
