1965 C-80 (edit)

I was in a little town in NW Montana, and happened to drive by this truck. I was looking for this or something else close to it. I talked to the young man that owned it. He had just drove it up from Texas with all his shop tools and 2 cars on a flat bed that came with it.(another pic). I paid a little more than I would have liked, but he was hard and fast on price. After driving it, I had to have it. I then drove it accross the state to my former home. About 500 mi. I knew that I was moving to New Mexico, so I thought It would come in handy to move my shop "stuff" and old cars. It runs great. 427 5spd with 2spd rear. Air brakes and a cold AC that you can see on the top. There's some rust here and there but not much and pretty "sloppy" steering. I hope to have a lot of fun with this or maybe sell it if it gets to be too much like break downs, storage, etc. It has some antique air ride seats in it. I thought that was pretty nice. Nice one. There literally hundreds of them that hauled grain from the Texas panhandle to Texas seaports every night during the 60's. Suddenly they were all gone. You found one of the few survivors.

Great find and appears to be in very good shape. I hope your old Hobbs trailer is air brake equipped and not vacuum .

Nice Truck. Is the Air Brake pedal all steel with no rubber pad on it and the word "Air Brake" on it?

Great looking truck! One of my favorite styles, especially with cast spoke wheels. I hope to find a similar truck one of these days. Would be great to see more pictures from all angles plus some inside shots.

Thanks for the coments guys. Won't be able to take more pics for a while. It's about 1300 mi away. Yes, plain steel brake pedal with air brake on it. When that engine is working, it's like music to me.. I wonder how the original 409 sounded under load. The hobbs trailer has air brakes and every thing stops fine. I missed a great spare air pump on ebay. A guy should have an extra and an extra fuel pump for any distance. It has an air horn that you don't want to blow buy a graveyard. Mert

I can almost close my eyes and hear the 409s Chevrolaying as we called it at night. I drove a gas GMC with a 370 engine that would run right with the 409s. Later I drove a cabover International. The Chevrolet guys hauled to the port while I hauled grain to feed lots in the Texas Hill country.

I remember the sound of a 409 pulling under load also, deep and throaty. Its very similar to a 427. Unless you're having problems with your current air compressor (pumping oil) you shouldn't need one soon. What I would look out for....
-Accessory brackets on the motor, (air comp., A/C comp., alternator, P/S) make sure none are broke and that all are tight.
-Drain oil and moisture from air tanks. Oil gums up air valves and deteriorates air chamber diaphragms. Water can freeze. With the truck at full operating temperature, shut the motor off, open air tank drain cock valves and let all pressure out. After the truck has been setting for about a half hour restart engine with drain cocks still open and let the compressor push out the remaining oil/moisture.
-If you have air leaking from a dual air chamber DO NOT try to take it apart unless you know what to do. They're spring loaded and very dangerous. Don't unscrew the clamp thinking its a simple fix, it can seriously hurt you.
-Keep up with the usual oil changes and tune ups.

Again you have a sharp looking truck, wish it were mine.

Do you happen to know how much grain a C-80 chev would pull back in '65 and at what speeds? Thanks. Mert
