I was curious to see if anyone knows if it is possible to re-locate shifter location in regards to where it comes thru the floor? I have a 4 speed saginaw I intend to use and the shifter mounts at the extreme rear of the tranny. My problem with this is I will have to cut a bit of my floor and removeable floor pan to accomidate it. Furthermore I will have to go to bucket seats as well, as my bench seat will interfer(it will be as far forward as possible, I'm not very tall). Has anyone ran into this or is there an adapter that will allow re-location? Thanks in advance for any imput on this! BTW this is on a 1965 C-20 chevy pick-up

I believe for the Saginaws, you can get a different shifter that mounts farther forward. It sounds like you have a shifter setup from a car.

You are correct, the set-up came out of a camaro. So would an aftermarket truck shifter be the way to go? Thanks for the speedy imput! Any other thoughts on what would work well in my situation?

One other option would be to replace the trans with a 4 speed from a truck. If that is something you would be interested in I have an sm420 in my '66 right now that I would trade for a car trans, as I am hoping to graft an overdrive onto a four speed and the truck ones don't really work for that. What gear ratios does your trans have?

Not sure on the gear ratio it is from an 80 camaro if that helps. I am no tranny specialist for sure but I went to a car tranny to get away from the truck geared trannys. My original one was a top loader with a low, low first gear. 50-60 mph and she was all reved out. I have now changed to a 373 rear end, from a 456 plus also went with a 3 speed out of a 81 malibu iraqi taxi. That switch moved my shifter back about 8 inches, which was about the max for seat clearence. The syncro to second went so that's why the switch to the saginaw which was free!

Yeah, mine has a 7.05:1 1st gear, but the sm420 and saginaw 4 speed have the same 1:1 final drive. My trans is also for a c20 so it should swap straight in if you are interested. Do you need any other parts for the '65?

So far I'm good for parts, I'm sure I'll find stuff missing upon re-assembly! I think I'll stick with my transmission, but thanks for the kind offer.

Here's what you need..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...%20and%20differential/Mockedupandfit.jpg

It's bolted to a saginaw. You can get them from Jegs or similar places.

You do have to cut a new hole in the floor, but can normally run it with a bench seat.

Final set up looks like this...

65 - Does your trans. have some cast & tapped bosses on the tailhousing to mount a shifter? If so, II've taken a piece of 1/2" plate before & used countersunk allens in it to mount it on the trans. & then mounted the shifter on it way forward by the main case.

When I installed the MYA6 (GM 89mm) in my 51, I just moved the hole for the original SM420 shifter to the correct location for my 89mm. I cut out the tower and gas welded it into the right location and then welded in a patch piece into the stock location.

While I was at it I replaced the driver's side floorboard and make a bigger access hole for the master cylinder.

I had to rebend the shift lever to clear the bench seat, and I should have bent it a little more forward because it almost hits the seat when I am in overdrive.

I'll see if I can post some pictures if that would help you.

I bought it off of Craigs list. I'll crawl under in a day or so and look up the part number. In the meantime, you might call Jegs, I'm pretty sure that's where the guy I bought from got it.

Thanks Avette4me and desertdog! I will first see if I can find a complete kit, but it is good to know there is a do it yourself fix. Especially if I can't find one or it is too pricey! If I do find a part # I will post it in this thread.. thx again guys!

Glad to help, even if just a little.

I'm pretty sure the shifter is a standard Competition plus. The special parts needed are the installation kit and the shifter.

I've got to the point in my restoration where I really need to figure this shifter thing out! I found that hurst supplies a shifter (part # 3910001), and install kit (# 3737919). What I can't find out is if this will solve my location problem, I'd hate to spend $700, just to have the same problem with a longer shifter! I've spent many hours trying to find info with no luck, does anyone know how to get in contact with hurst's tec dept???? Any guidance or help apprieciated!!

I'm glad to read that it worked out for you.

Next step is a 3.38 differential from Patricks. Excellent mod to go with a 4 or 5 speed.

I love/hate this stuff. grin
