I have two Indiana titles that I need to transfer/surrender to Illinois. My question is that they are old titles and do I need to get them notarized in Indiana with a stamp (even though there isn't a place for the stamp) or can I get them notarized in Illinois????

I had an Indiana title. It was signed in the right place. I took it into the Texas Department of Public Safety office for transfer. They said it was a clean title and transfered it over to me.

Now, because the truck is apart and I could not have it inspected the title is temporary. When I get the truck together and have it inspected - they will match up this temporary title to the ID plate and I will get a permanent title.

I hope you have the same situation.

Mine are both signed in the correct seller location but on yours was there notary info? Unsure if I have to do that or not.I don't believe I would have to get it inspected here in Illinois, I've never had to go that far.

The best thing you can do is call your licensing authority (where you get your tag) explain your circumstance and find out what they require. They are the folks you'll need to please. Any info you get here instead of "from the horse's mouth" is supposition and could lead you astray.

I have lived in five different states and my experience is if the title has a notary spot it's required, if it doesn't then it's not. In other words if the state you live in requires a notary on their titles and you bring in a title from a state that doesn't they skip the notary part. and vice/versa if your state doesn't require a notary but the out-of-state title does then you will have to get it notarized.

This is a good point. I don't remember if it had a place for a notary stamp or if it did have the stamp. Sorry. I can't check now. It is with the State.

You can't necessarily go by that either. Kansas no longer requires a notary stamp but all titles issued prior to the change still have an area for the stamp & signature. Even with the space for the notary stamp on the older titles, a stamp is not required according to a friend who is a notary. Call your licensing authority and stop the guess work.

State of Illinois requires no notary on titles anymore, haven't for at least 20plus years, along with no inspections. I have been doing all my dealings at an Illinois DMV office for the past 30yrs and it's cheaper & depending on the office its even faster...Joe

I just bought a trailer in Illinois and had it titled in Indiana with no problem. Not sure if it will be the same for you, but I would think there is some sort of agreement for neighboring states. But, when I bought my 99 it had a FL title, I had to have a title check done by the police. Good luck.
