In my 62 with the 305 comm. I had the WW stromburg rebuilt profesionally but she dose not want to fire off now, is there any common problems with this or should I look at the timing chain? before hand it would run but bacfire a lot if you stepped on the accelerator to fast, you really had to ease it up in RPM's then release the clutch and it would do ok, the carb was origonal never rebuilt so I figured it was the problem but guess not, any suggestions? Thanks for answers in advance everone.

so you are saying that it won't fire up now that you had the carb rebuilt. who re and re'd the carb , you or them?. theoretically the carb should be better now than it was before,so if nothing else was changed or altered it should fire up. unless you can tell us if anything else transpiered it is hard to say.
reason for backiring is usually that it is firing on open valves, perhaps in your case burnt valves or the ignition is doing something to make that happen
things to do and check
1 is the carb back on properly, not sucking air at the carb base-gskt problem
2 give it a compression test as that will give you an idication of what the valves are about
3 check out your distr that the points are set and working properly. check the wires inside the distr are all tight and n perhaps the wire itself is not pulling away from the wire connector end(where it crimps on the wire) as sometimes when you step on the throttle thee ignition advances and pulls that wire out and then relaxes back into that position when you let your foot off the throttle and make connection again

If you did the carb. & now it won't run either you are not getting gas through it or you are getting toomuch & flooding it.
Look down the throat of the carb & work the throttle. It should squart a little gas into the throat. If not pour a little gas down it & try it. If it is getting gas & not flooding pull the coil wire out of the center of the dist. & hold it about 1/4 in. from a ground. Have someone turn the engine over with the key on & see if you get a spark. You don't need another website. This one has some very knowledgeable people. You might post it in the Engine-drive line section. More people look at it.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

I had the carb rebuilt by a pro. carb. guy and I put it on with new gaskets and cleaning the intake manifold and a very thin film of gasket sealer on both sides, I did try putting fuel down the throat of it to prime it but no luck firing it off, (about two shot glasses worth at a time)nothing else was tinkered with and I made sure to mark the choke setting and all the other stuff to have it back exactly as it was origonally when I took it off, after I knew the pot was full of fuel I used starting fluid and not 1 cylinder tried to ignite, on comp. check I only have 1 cylinder that is off by about 7 lbs. at the most all the rest are within 3 lbs.. I will go through the distributor and see what I find there, I did pull the coil wire for spark and that works fine.

sometimes we are pretty closed minded. I have seen some pretty simple questions here go on for pages and pages and never really come to a conclusion.
I did not say that he go to another web site for the solution, but there was a site that is more focused on these enfs and there idiosyncrosis.
here is an excert from a current thread pertaining to a stromberg carb. sound familiar;

I agree with Don on going to the Holley, based on your Stromberg WW2 possibly having a leak at the shaft. Carb kits don't deal with that at all. I took my original carb to a great carb shop here in Phoenix after talking with the guy- part of their rebuild includes the throttle plate shaft bushings, so I spent $86 to have it done right, and solved my problems of cold-starting, backfiring, and just generally not running like it should. If it weren't for your vac leak, I would say rebuild it yourself for about 20 bucks- they are very easy to do as carbs go.

good carb, bad carb or no carb the engine should fire, not run, with starting fluid if there is any sign of spark (with in reason). You said that it has spark at the coil but did you check at the plug?

You might also have multiple issues. My '65 GMC's 305 has been running like crap for a while (many of the same symptoms as yours) and it seems to have been a combination of the Stromberg needing rebuilt, a vacuum leak at the brake booster, bad points, the plate inside the distributor being displaced because of a bad set screw and a fuel pump diaphram that disintegrated and precipitated the whole cascade failure.

I had to fault check everything. Maybe you should, too -- you might find you have more than one causal factor at work. Check every system -- even if you think it's good. fuel system, electrical system, vacuum (all of it) -- verify good and move on to the next system.

Good luck!!

John
