The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop 37 engine splash pan color

I'm reassembling a 37 pickup that belonged to my Dad. I am painting the "splash" pans that surround the lower engine area. the exhaust and oil breather/overflow go down through these. they are currently black, but were repainted about 30 years ago. Is black the correct color? Would it have been a chassis black finish or some other finish. I'm also wondering about the engine color. The gray that's on it now (a recent repaint) is about the shade of a gray primer. I've got conflicting info that says this color is correct, and other opinions say it should be darker. I personally think it should be a darker gray. Does anybody know who has "the" correct paint for this? I have heard some restoration engine paint colors are not accurate. I appreciate your input.

The "splash" pans on my 39 have the original black paint. Looks like a chassis or satin finish.

Yes, the engine paint should be quite dark. The splash pans on my 41 where the same almost gloss black as the frame.

Filling station, Chev's of the 40's, and Bill Hirsch's new darker color. Not Jim Carter's or Hirsch's lighter gray.
