I read on another site that you can soda blast an assembled engine without problems. True??? | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 130 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 130 | I don't know about soda blasting but I used to steam clean alot. Any somewhat hot water or steam really takes off the gunk and no need worry about any grit. | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | Try and hook up Your pressure washer to the drain on Your hot water tank , the hot water will do a good job on Your engine just check on the instuctions of Your blaster to see if is rated for hot water .

After rinsing it off with water and wiping itt dry, I sprayed it with phosphoric acid metal prep and wiped it off carefully. | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 7 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 7 | i think a good steam clean will do wonders | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 101 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 101 | Personally, I'd be worried about grit getting into the engine. I'd use Castrol Purple, a variety of stiff brushes AND the hot water from the water heater mentioned above. Once that gets all that can be gotten, I'd use a variety of wire wheels chucked into my drill. Then a good wipe down with acetone or Brakleen and paint it. | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 | scrape off the heavy stuff and shoot it with a good layer of easy off and let it sit a while. then give it another liberal dose. after a couple of hours use a garden sprayer with the hottest water you can get and hose it off and pat it dry. after the first dose it may need another easy offen. the heavy stuff must be removed first in order for it to be effective. | | | | Oldog in Md. I also had a extremly greesy trans and I mean the stuff was a hard 3/4 --- 1 " in places in ten minutes it was clean as could be . You need to nutralise the soda afterwards other wise paint will not stick , but this part is easy and it also has a rust inhibitor in there .
The parts looked so good that I wished I could clear coat and leave like that
Soda is also great on sheet metal as no heat is generated and will not warp | | |
