Personally, I'd be worried about grit getting into the engine. I'd use Castrol Purple, a variety of stiff brushes AND the hot water from the water heater mentioned above. Once that gets all that can be gotten, I'd use a variety of wire wheels chucked into my drill. Then a good wipe down with acetone or Brakleen and paint it.
