Hello,

I am getting ready to install my Glass Bowl fuel filter on my 216.

I'm pretty sure that it's going to have to go on the line between the carburetor and the 90° bend where it goes over the block, but the horn and the vacuum line are in rather inconvenient places.

The Vacuum line shouldn't be too much of a problem to adjust, but the horn might be interesting. So far, I am thinking that it will have to go next to the horn trumpet.

Does anyone have a pic of how (and where) you mounted yours? Any other advice?

Thanks in advance,
Brendan

Thats good information. I would like to do the same, but I have a carter yf and a standard "straight up" horn bracket. I think the horn bracket is the key part for this filter bowl installation. I'm looking for one as we speak.

The intake manifold on a 235 with a Rochester must be positioned differently than with a 216 and a W-1. Either that, or the Rochester is just that much smaller.

The way that's set up isn't gonna fit with the horn where it is on my engine. There'll be no room to connect the line into the filter.

I do have some extra tubing scraps laying around... I could bend an oddball 90° piece and put the filter behind the horn that way.

Does the filter have to be right on the carb?

The filter was a part of the fuel pump. Kinda odd because the bowl is on top instead of the bottom. Check the service manual.

No, the filter was an option. At least, it was back in 1946.

The bowl filters strongly resemble the fuel pumps, so I can understand your confusion.

I don't know if it's an original setup, but this is how I rigged my fuel filter. I have a 216 with a W-1 carb and a glass bowl filter too. Here.

I have the exact same setup as steppenwood's on my '51.

Thanks guys.

That's how I was thinking I was gonna have to pull this off.

Looks like I'm going to be rebending some conduit... grin

My 39 216 has the filter bowl on top and as a part of the fuel pump.
i have seen these filter bowls that go inline.
both before the pump and after. just so they are tight. i would recomend after the pump. any place in the fuel line. away from hot stuff.

I would NOT place it close to or above the exhaust header in case it (usually a cork gasket) leaks; vibrates loose; rattles open; or cracks !!

Thanks for your input, everyone! It was very helpful.

I got the filter installed tonight (after some botched attempts at bending steel tubing) and she's out in the garage running right now!
