Does a 54 Chevy 235 have an oil pump or a dipper? Virg

I believe all 235's had oil pumps. the 216's had the dippers.

All 216s, 235s, and 261s had oil pumps.

I think tc meant to say "all 216s, 235s and 261s had oil pumps". The "low pressure" 216s and 235s had dippers for the rods but the crank bearings and rocker arms were fed via a pump.

I thought all 216's were dippers and 235 and others had a pump. How do you know if it is a low pressure one? Virg

All 216's and all the early 235s are dipper-oiled on the rod bearings, but pressure oiled on the mains and rockers and they all have an oil pump. '54 (actually '53 Powerglide) was the first of the "high-pressure" engines that also lubed the rod bearings with oil from the pump.

The simple way is to look for the triangular-shaped "oil distributor" assembly down near the oil pan rail on the driver's side middle of the engine. It's a piece of stamped sheet metal attached with three bolts, IIRC. The splash-oilers will have that item, whether they're 216 or 235, and the full-pressure 235's don't have it.
