This is a 1956 Chevrolet 6100 dump truck. I don't really know much of anything about these or this truck but wanted to see if you guys could help me identify what engine it has. Obviously it is a straight 6 but that is about as much as I know. Hopefully these pictures are helpful.

if its the original most likely a 235

Is there anyway to tell for sure? Do these have a serial number or any identification numbers on them?

I would agree, probably a 235. The fastest way to tell a 235 from the 261 is the 261 would have the "captain's bars" on the block behind the distributor and above the starter. If they're not there it's probably a 235. The 261 was found in the 6500 series 56 trucks but I have seen them in other size trucks.

The 261 was an option only for 2-ton trucks during it's early years (6xxx and C60 series). Jim Carter states that it was standard after 1958 on 2-ton and larger trucks? I'll check a 1960 Truck Data Book later this evening to see on what sized trucks it was optional. It was still available on 4x4s into 1963.

The right hand side of the engine block (passenger side) just forward of the distributor has a "CASTING NUMBER" integral with the engine block. This series of CASTING NUMBERS can be used to determine the engine year of manufacture and the original engine displacement. My guess, based solely on the pictures is a 235 CI, year unknown.

The casting number will only ID the block as far as displacement and years of manufacture, not what year the block was cast. That number is cast on the back of the block on the pasenger side, just behind the starter.
What does the Gross Vehicle Weight plate say? 6000 series with the 18000# GVW used the 261 as standard equipment.
