I just bought a 1960 LCF 60 that still has the original painted lettering on the doors. In addition to the owner's business name and the truck weight, the tire size (8.25-20) was painted on the doors. Anyone know why that would have been done? The truck was used in northwest Ohio both for farm use and in a farm implement dealership. Occasional trips were probably made to Racine Wisconsin to pick up machinery from the factory. Were some tolls at that time based on tire size? I am trying to find out why the tire size was listed.

Thanks for any help.

Hy HankOH, welcome, just a thought, one of the factors governing G.V.W. is tire size. There were optional sizes available that would increase the G.V.W., probably the scale operators had a chart with tire sizes, number of axles, and what the G.V.W. was with that equipment, just a guess.

It's a good guess 3B because it is correct. Most states use weight in lbs. per inch of tires/rim width.

Thanks for the responses - I have been wondering. I haven't seen many if any other trucks with that information on them.

Illinois used to go so far as to require the GVW painted on the side of a pickup. Can you imagine that today?
