The other day I was driving a new project home that sounded great around town but once on the freeway, towards the end of the trip it developed a knock. Oil pressure showed on the gauge but wasn't overly high. I've also noticed a cough in the exhaust on the left bank at idle. I'm guessing maybe bearings and an oil pump?

This was a trade that is basically a freebee and it's a '67 Ford so I'd like to get it running well and trade it off for another GMC.

Don't know if this could be related or not, but have you checked and adjusted the valves?

I'm wondering if a piece of carbon broke loose & was sitting on top the piston & then part of it got into the exhaust valve.

If its a 302, change the plugs. When a plug goes bad on a 302, it sounds like a rod is out. Dont know why, just know it is.

I pulled the valve covers today and it has hydraulic lifters with no valve adjustment at all??? Adjustment determined by push rod length only? No broken lifters. I did notice that the valve covers and heads are extremely gunked up which makes me wonder if a lifter is gummed up. I might get a can of engine flush later today as see cleaning it out makes a difference on the cough and the oil pressure issue.
