I'd like to replace it with a new 12v starter but I didn't see 12v starters the Carter or LMC catalogs. Several strings suggest the 6v starters are fine for a 12v system. Should I just get a replacement 6v or is there a good place to go for 12v starter?

I don't know what they call it or were it came from. When I get through with the mechanics I will see about matching the paint & do some touch up.

Your typically ok using the 6 volt starter, however, like any starter 6 or 12 it will only take so much. If you cranked on it long enough the starter will heat up to the point of blowing the solder out of the armature pins. When this happens it usually takes the field coils with it. If your wanting to upgrade to 12 volt PM me and I can give more helpful info on this.
