Looking for any help setting the points and the gap for the plugs on my 49 1/2 ton truck, also what type of oil should be put in the motor.

20 or 30 weight (detergent and multi-grade oil are OK if the engine is relatively clean inside the valve cover. Otherwise, detergent/multi-grade oils might loosen caked-on internal crude and clog oil passages.

If/when you have read the above information, and still do not feel confident, keep asking questions.

First ya have to have a feeler gauge and a plug gap tool. The plug gap tool comes in a few different forms, choice being that of the mechanic.
I would get a small feeler gauge as they are handier than the normal sized ones for use in the distributor.
As far as how to it,I would get a manual with pictures so you have it always, and the pics will help a lot.
Beings you are up in Illinois and its already getting cool put 10w-30 in that thing. Back in the 50's when they built that thing they used 10, 20, or 30w depending on the temp outside and straight weight oils are getting a little hard to find and not necessary anymore. As to the brand of oil most brands will work just fine, but I'd stay away from Penzoil and use something better.
The real key is not who's oil but how often you change it. On stuff I don't drive a whole I'll change every 1000 miles.

Thank you for the information, unfortunatley Stanley will be living in an unheated garage so we will do what we can to protect him from the cold, and boy does it get cold here.
