54 yrs old and in my 5th childhood.I've got a 53 half ton truck project but my question concerns a roadster pickup i'm building out of my scrap pile.
I have an extra 216 with a top loader 4spd I want to use but I need it to work with an open driveshaft. Is this doable or should I hunt up another tranny ?
I'd really like to keep a top loader though.

From '55 through '67 GM used the same tranny with an open driveline. All you need to find is the rear coverplate and rear yoke from one of these transmissions. Swap out the rear yoke and coverplate on the earlier tranny and you are done.

What're the Engine and Tranny Serial Numbers? that should tell us what the original application was. My 4 speed is original equipment for my 3/4 ton (as far as I can tell) and it has an open driveline.
Half ton and Car Trannies had the Torque Tube setup that I don't think will work for an open driveline.

Is the 4-speed a truck trans like we are guessing? Does it have the little lever/rod to put it in reverse? If so then it's a non-synchro pre-48. What's it out of? Nifty50 is right, if it's a SM420 and has a torque tube ball/socket on the end then it's from a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. Bigger trucks at least from 48 had an open yoke. Good luck.
